Alexander is having a very bad day. From waking up with gum in his hair to biting his tongue before he goes to sleep, Alexander’s day does not improve.
To prepare this partner center, copy and cut out the event cards. Then place the cards and a copy of the book at a center. To play, each partner takes a card and, in turn, reads it aloud. Next, the duo skims the book to determine which event happens first. The student with the first event takes both cards. If a partner draws a “Move to Australia” card, that child automatically takes both cards. If both partners draw “Move to Australia” cards, they keep the cards and draw again. After all of the cards have been drawn, the partners count their cards to determine the winner.

After sharing summer reading recommendations, have each student decorate a folder so it resembles a suitcase. Next, provide access to copies of the T-shirt and shorts patterns. Then guide each student to record on the patterns the titles and authors of books she’d like to read. Finally, have the child cut out the T-shirts and shorts and glue them inside her folder for a ready-to-use list of great summer reads!
